The largest amphitheatre ever built, the symbol of Rome for almost two thousand years
Begun by Vespasian around AD 72 and inaugurated by his son Titus in 80, the Flavian Amphitheatre could hold more than 50,000 spectators. For four centuries Rome watched gladiator fights, hunts of exotic animals and executions here, offered to the people by the emperor.
Its 189 metres of length and 48 metres of height, its eighty arches and its system of corridors could fill and empty the tiers in minutes. Beneath the arena, a maze of lifts and trapdoors made animals and scenery appear from nowhere. Earthquakes, looting and the reuse of its stone shaped the ruin we visit today.

Yes, it is essential. Daily visitor numbers are capped and entry is at a fixed time. The official ticket office releases each date thirty days ahead, at 9 am Rome time, and in season the slots go within hours; tickets on the platforms also fill up several weeks before the date. No. The standard ticket gives access to the first two tiers, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The arena floor needs a specific ticket, and the underground can only be visited with a licensed guide, in small groups: these are the rarest places in the monument. Your stay inside the Colosseum is limited to 1 h 15 with a standard ticket (1 h 30 with the arena), enough to walk round both tiers. Then allow a good two hours for the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, which form a single site to be visited the same day or the next. Bring water and a hat in summer: there is almost no shade.
Yes. Tickets are issued in the visitor's name: everyone, children included, shows a passport or ID card matching the name on the ticket, at the Colosseum entrance and again at the Forum. Since May 2026 the name on an official ticket can only be changed once, no later than seven days before the visit: book in the name of the person who will come.
Yes, in season: the archaeological park runs "Una Notte al Colosseo", a one-hour guided tour of the arena floor and the underground, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 pm to 11 pm, in groups of 25, sold only on its official ticket office one week ahead. The 2026 season runs from 7 July to 22 October, with no tours on 22 and 24 September or 1 October; dates and the €50 price are on colosseo.it.
